Customize SketchUp Interior Design
Author: Jonathan C.
In this article, we’ll guide you through customizing the interior of your SketchUp house model. Whether you’re looking to change colors and textures, adjust interior features, or the furniture. I will show you how to personalize your new 3D house.
In this article, we will guide you through:
- Editing SketchUp interior design.
- Adding your personal touch.
Start your SketchUp interior design
- Open the SketchUp model you want to customize. Remember to make a backup before you start customizing your interior. (Very important)
- Once you’ve opened your model, make sure to unlock it if it’s locked. Select the entire model and click unlock until the color changes from red to blue.
- Navigate within your house model using pan and orbit – remember to set the camera to perspective, not parallel projection. Find a comfortable angle where you can see everything, you can also adjust the field of view if needed.
Customize SketchUp interior design
- We will now change the color of our ceiling boards to another one. To do this, open your tray (shortcut key B). Then, click the sample paint icon. Once you've done this, select the surface you want to change, in this case, the ceiling boards.
- Now, click on Edit and select a color you want to replace the white with. You can also choose to enter a color code by switching the picker.
- Now, I will show you how to import your own textures. Follow the same procedure as before, but this time, click on Browse Material File instead.
- Find the texture or material you want to use for the ceiling. We’ll choose a wood texture, but you can select whatever you like – click Open when you're ready.
- As you can see, the ceiling boards now have the wood-like texture we selected.
- We’ve done the same with the walls, using exactly the same procedure.
- And one last example where we’ve changed the floors to a lighter wood nuance.
Follow this simple technique to change everything about your new house. It’s really easy, and with this method, anyone can succeed.
Import from 3D warehouse
SketchUp has its own warehouse, the “3D Warehouse,” where you can download everything from furniture to windows. Use it for your new house design and find items for your interior design. Whether you want to change the outlets or grab some designer furniture, everything is possible, and it’s completely free. Let’s get started.
- Click on the 3D Warehouse icon. Use the search bar to find the component/furniture you want.
- When you’ve found the item you want, click the download icon.
- Drag your model into your desired place. In this example we wanted a interior plant in our bedroom window sill.
- If you don’t want to download something but instead want to change the existing layout, double-click the group and move the furniture/items you want.
- Let’s try changing the placement of the outlets. Use the Selection Tool to click on the outlet you want to move.
- Then, use the Move Tool to drag and place the outlets in your preferred locations. Alternativly you can also add your own outlets from the 3D Warehouse - just like we added the plant to the bedroom.
